Product Description
Malaluba has painted the clan design of her classificatory Waku’s country, that is of her
classificatory father’s father’s mother.
Several of the clans have only one or two language speakers left and the concern was that
the designs would die out with them. The aim of the Larrakitj collection was therefore to
collect as many clan designs as possible and this was achieved with the assistance of the
Art Centre manager at Yirrkala
The round designs on this work are known as Milngurr or sacred springs. Wukili are the
sacred fonts or wells that spew fresh water into the sea of this country. The totem catfish
taste the
Water and in doing so unsettle the silts around the wells. The state and taste of this water
is known as Wiyirril and the cross hatched designs of this painting represent the water.
