Product Description
The painting depicts events at Yathikpa where the hunters Burrak and Garramaji went
hunting for dugong in their canoe. The dugong fled to dangerous waters around
Marrtjala and when the hunters threw their harpoon at the dugong it struck a rock,
the spark causing the Ancestral
Fires to flare and boil the waters. The canoe capsized and drowned the hunters.
The Fire had its origins at Yathikpa and was first carried by Baru the Ancestral
Crocodile. Fire represents a profound knowledge that takes wisdom and courage to
handle correctly..
The object known as Dhakandjali is the hollow log coffin and is shown in the water.
Elliptical shapes within the work are mangrove leaves.
