Product Description
This painting epitomizes the great visual effect that can be attained by strict miny’tji or
sacred clan design alone. The Yirrkala pieces were on the whole collected for their
miny’tji to graphically illustrate the differences between clan designs. Each design is as
must a coat of arms for the clan as we would see it for a family in Europe.
Milminyina’s sacred clan design represents Rulyapa or the rough salt water country
between Nhulunbuy and the large island of Dhambaliya. The water balloons up from
the sacred depths around the sacred rock Manhalla which can be the manifestation of
Daymirri, the whale.
