The Black Mountain creation story comes is several versions and this reflects the large
geographic area of the Yalanji lands with separate groups living in isolation from one
another.
Luke’s version is of a woman who was desired by two brothers. She indicated to them
that she would make her choice between them but rather than wait the brothers argued
and threw giant boulders at one another which formed the two hills now known as Black
Mountain. The woman was offended at the brothers fighting and turned herself into the
Olive Python and slid away between the boulders.
