Product Description
When you see the dragon fly and the spear grass starting to go brown it signifies the
coming of the dry season and also the turtle season. The longneck turtle is a Llirritja
totem and the artist’s dreaming.
In the old days when turtles were caught and cooked, young boys were not allowed to
eat them. They were reserved for the older men of the tribe. Once the boys had gone
through their smoking ceremony as part of their initiation an elder would give them a
piece of roast meat as a sign that they were allowed to eat turtles. It was also a sign
that they had passed into manhood and had observed their cultural traditions.
